First Aid, defined as the immediate, temporary care given in case of sudden illness, will be given when necessary. First aid will be rendered by the school nurse or by a school staff member. To ensure the health of all students and staff, please pick up (or have an emergency contact who can pick up) your child promptly (within 20-30 minutes) if you receive a call from the school stating your child is ill or injured. In case of a serious emergency/accident, every attempt will be made to contact the parent/guardian before the child is taken to the doctor. Please inform the school immediately of changes in telephone numbers, addresses, or work locations and provide the name and phone number of at least two emergency contacts. Emergency contacts should be people who are reliable and can be trusted to pick-up and care for your child should they become ill or should an emergency arise.
To comply with the California immunization law, parents, guardians, or responsible relatives must make sure the school has verification that the student has had the required immunizations before starting school. For a current list of the required immunizations to attend California schools please visit www.shotsforschool.org or contact your child's doctor's office.
When allowed by law, medication (including all over the counter medications) prescribed to a student by an authorized health care provider must be in writing, and with parental written permission, may be administered by a school nurse or, when a school nurse or other medically licensed person is unavailable and the physician and parent have authorized administration of medication by unlicensed personnel for the student. Forms to be signed by a parent and physician for this purpose are available in the office.
It is recommended that parents check weekly for signs of head lice. When shampooing, observe behind the ears and above the neck for nits or eggs (pearly or brown ovals cemented to the hair shaft or live lice (pinhead size to 1/8). Routine screening is important since many students will exhibit no symptoms or itching. If evidence of infestation is found, please notify the school so appropriate action can be taken. When a student is initially identified as having live crawling lice the school nurse will notify the parent/guardian. The parent/guardian shall be provided information on the biology of head lice, methods to eliminate the infestation, and directions to examine household contacts for lice and nits. The school nurse, if appropriate, will examine other students most likely to have had direct head to head contact with the affected student. Parents are instructed to continue an ongoing removal of nits by daily combing with a nit comb or removal by hand. It is expected that the student will return to school the next day and within a maximum of 2 days after notification. In order for the student to return to school, the parent/guardian must accompany their child to school for a readmission check. The student may be readmitted to school only after treatment has been completed and they have been checked by district health staff (max by the 2nd day from notification).
